Oso Creek Trail Active Transportation Enhancements Project

Project Background

The Oso Creek Trail Active Transportation Enhancements Project area (Project Area) begins at Forbes Road, just south of Crown Valley Parkway, and continues along Oso Creek from the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo Metrolink Station to the southern City limits. This project lies within the City of Laguna Niguel’s 2011 Gateway Specific Plan area (Gateway Area). The Gateway Area was historically a nondescript district bisected and highly constrained by freeway, rail, and utility infrastructure corridors. The City of Laguna Niguel has been implementing the Gateway Specific Plan to transform the Gateway Area into a vibrant, high-intensity transit and pedestrian-oriented district. To enhance connectivity for pedestrians and bicyclists, several active transportation improvements have been identified and will be addressed as part of this project.

Project Improvements

Sidewalk Gap Closure

Sidewalk gap closure along the east side of Forbes Road, south of Crown Valley Parkway, providing safer access for pedestrians to and from the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo Metrolink station and the adjoining businesses and residences.

Crossing Improvements

Crossing improvements at the Forbes Road cul-de-sac, including a pedestrian crosswalk providing safer access for pedestrians and bicyclists using the existing trail to cross Forbes Road, as well as ADA curb ramps.

Extending the Existing Trail

Extending the existing trail along Oso Creek from the Metrolink station to the southern Laguna Niguel City limits, near the entrance to Saddleback Church in San Juan Capistrano, providing access to Camino Capistrano.

Map of Proposed Changes

All project improvements are located within the City of Laguna Niguel, along Forbes Road and the Orange County Flood Control District’s Oso Creek right-of-way. The improved active transportation network connections and enhancements will increase mobility and safety for Laguna Niguel residents using the corridor, as well as the community walking or bicycling to the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo Metrolink Station, Saddleback College, the Shoppes at El Paseo, and other regional destinations.
